We Are Still Here

So it has been a little while since I have last posted. I'm a slacker what can I say. Things have been going really good for our family. All of the children have adjusted really well to church and school. Mason received student of the month his first month. Michelle earned a lunch with the Principal. Both Mason and Saige have started transitioning into a mainstream classroom. ALL children happily go to their classes on Sunday. Honestly, I couldn't have asked for things to go any more smoothly than they have. As far as the progress on the house goes that is moving along too. In fact we are set to close on the 15th of next month. We are so excited and can hardly believe that it's almost time. There will be a lot of changes once we move as far as decor goes and also living arrangements. The boys will be sharing a room as well as the girls. I don't think that they will mind, especially since they really don't spend all that much time in their rooms. I think that we will not see them for a while when we move as they will have so much space to play and have their toys back!

Speaking of toys today I ordered a few products that will hopefully help little Miss Saige with her oral fixations as well as help with positive reinforcement for all of the children. The first thing I ordered for her was a chew butterfly that I can make into a necklace for her. You see she is constantly chewing on things and/or having her hands, hair, clothes, or whatever in her mouth. This chew as well as the triangle shaped one should help her with this.

Next up I ordered this awesome chips system for the children. Each tube can hold up to 35 chips and on the outside of them you can set a goal for the child so that they have a visual for them to achieve. I can't wait to hand out chips for helping, using manners, making good choices, etc. I am really hoping that this system works!

A Sensory Room

We will have a room in our new house that we are thinking of dedicating to a sensory room for the children, especially Mason and Saige. With Mason, we have a good idea of various types of equipment that would work well for him. With Saige we have no idea. Perhaps once she starts therapy services we can figure some things out. Here are some things that I have found so far that I think might work! First up a tent of some type that way they can have some sort of confinement in as well as bring in a flashlight, books, blanket, etc.

Next up is some type of swing. I'm not sure that this one will work because I want him to be able to sit on it and lay on it. He utilizes this a lot in therapy. He will have to lay on his tummy and use his muscles to "go fishing" for toys. Not sure that this particular swing would provide all that he needs.
This next chair I think is cool. Not only can he go inside it and fold down the canopy but it also swivels. All of the children love to be pushed around on a desk type chair.
This little trampoline wannabe looks fun and has great reviews.

I also want to make a stretchy blanket and need to make a weighted blanket. Also a ball pit will be in the works as both Saige and Mason really benefit from these. Thinking of doing a little reading corner as well. I've seen a lot of sensory rooms with lava lamps...that could be relaxing and calming too. There are so many options. I know that it probably sounds crazy to be putting all of this into a house, but we really want to create a space that can be utilized by them to help them calm down and hopefully one day they will just go in there on their own and realize that these things help them to calm and regain control of their bodies. Not to mention that we are looking to find therapy offices that will be closer to our new home and 95% of the OT's are home based. I really don't want to do home-based because I know that Mason uses the larger equipment that is found in a clinical setting. This may help in bridging that gap too.

Time to Spill the Beans...

Well I figured that now was just as good as any to share some really big news! We are moving. Surprised? Probably not. Anyhow, here's the scoop. Mason and Saige have both been diagnosed with Autism and quite frankly what the school district out here where we live just was not going to cut it for us. Mason was going to be placed in a self-contained classroom with MR children and we felt like he really wouldn't be academically challenged, and therefore would become bored and get into trouble. Miss Saige, who mind you didn't speak to her teacher at all her first year of preschool, was going to be placed in a mainstream classroom and pulled out for speech therapy. Um, you are going to put a child that hasn't said two words to a teacher in two years in a classroom of 23+ children with 1 teacher and you expect her to be fine. Good luck with that! Anyhow, to say that we were not enthusiastic about these two "solutions" would be an understatement. So we got looking into what we could do. I know that these children are bright and can be taught anything. However, I also know that I cannot even come close to providing them with the social aspect that they would be receiving at a school. So we were determined to get them into the very best program possible. My sister in law works over in the Litchfield Elementary School District and has had nothing but good things to say. So, we checked into it and they have a wonderful program. Just as important to me is how enthusiastic and genuine the vice president of special education was. I was really impressed with her. Her excitement for the programs they offer and for the progress the students have made was undeniable. Now the problem was how to get them in. We tried a variance but no luck there. We found a home that we were going to rent for a year and thought we were good....until we found out that we can qualify for another home right now. There was a home that we had in mind and now that we were pre-qualified we jumped on it. So, we signed papers this past week and the home should be ready in about 4-5 months. This home has just about everything that was important to us. Large lot (1/3 of an acre), enough room for our family (4 bedrooms), had to be a single level, beautiful kitchen, and I am so stoked that my car will fit in the garage! It's the simple things in life! :) So there you go. Probably too much for one post but hey that's my life! :)

Little Miss Saige also received the diagnosis of Autism today. Lonnie and I suspected this, but nonetheless, it is hard to hear it. So, now what? She has many problems socially, like Mason, but completely opposite of him. Mason is very energized and has a lot of behaviors. Saige is very mellow and often times is "in her own world". She does not communicate with others often. So Lonnie and I are really confused as what to do. I know that I can teach her anything, as academics is not the issue right now. However, I also know that I cannot provide a classroom setting like she would receive in a school setting if she were to be home schooled. Frankly, I am scared to death to put her in a mainstream classroom for many reasons. I'm afraid she will be the invisible child in the corner, who doesn't get noticed or helped because she is not a bother to anyone. I have issues with what children are being taught in schools. I worry about her being picked on because of her social issues. I fear that perhaps her depression will become greater. Why? Why must she go through this? Why must she have this? Will she ever be able to function "normally" and get along okay in society? I guess these are all questions that we will eventually find the answers to. But for now it is difficult. We don't want to make the wrong choice for her or others in our family. Through it all we are so grateful for the outpouring of love and support for our children and family from so many! We are truly blessed! :()

A couple of months ago we noticed something growing in one of the planter beds in our backyard. Lonnie and I asked the children about it and if any of them happened to know who planted something and if so what it was. Michelle asked if whoever did it was going to be in trouble. We assured her that no one was going to be in trouble we just were curious. She then proceeded to tell us that she planted carrot seeds. Oh really. And boy did she. There are even carrots growing in the grass just outside of the planter. Obviously she wasn't too careful with planting the seeds. Anyhow, I went to pick some of them today and this is what we found! They are huge! The ones on the left I just bought at the store. Interesting comparison. We also have planted many more things such as strawberries, red and green peppers, tomatoes, grapes, cucumber, corn, lettuce, squash, green onion, and more (I just can't remember)! This is our first garden and it sure has been fun for everyone!

Book of Mormon Reading Chart

Miss Michelle will be turning 8 in about a year and a half. I know that that may seem far away for some, but holy cow that came fast! One thing that I have wanted for my children is to read the Book of Mormon before they are baptized. Obviously, she cannot "read" the book on her own yet but she can repeat what I say! :) So that's what we are doing. I am hoping to read a chapter a day with her. I started early because I'm sure, no matter how good my intentions are, that there will be days that we will miss. I am kind of sad when I think about the fact that I have started this with my oldest child. They grow up way too fast. Please feel free to download this Book of Mormon Reading Chart for your own use! Today We Are Grateful

It is no secret that we have difficult children and things can be very challenging around our home. Mr. Mason, in particular, has a very difficult time with things that are very basic. He has been a handful and requires constant supervision. We have seen many specialists and today we finally received his diagnosis. It does not come a surprise to us, as we have felt like this is what he had through our research and readings. He previously had been diagnosed with ADHD at the age of two. Today, however, he was given the diagnosis of Autism. Although we knew that there was just something different about him and had suspected this disorder, it is still a difficult diagnosis to swallow. It is hard to see the struggles that he goes through on a daily basis and to know that there is nothing we can do to help him is just plain awful. We are so grateful to have this very special young man in our lives. He has blessed so many at such a young age. I hope and pray that he will continue to grow and recognize the things that his body is trying to tell him so that he can learn to control himself and his urges. So, if you happen to meet or know someone who has autism here are my thoughts on these special individuals.

Chore Charts

I have been looking forever for a good chore chart....AKA one that will work for us. With two children now able to read, but one of them still needing picture cues for a lot of things I didn't want to have to recreate one every so often. So with a lot of time spent I am so glad to say that they are done! (Except for Gage's.) Here's how they work. Each child has two sets of cards that are different colors. This one is Michelle's and the chores that are to be done daily are yellow and then she can do extra chores (the ones that are pink) to earn money. We are also trying to teach the children about tithing and figured that they would need some sort of income so now seemed like the perfect time to implement this. :)

My hair is getting way too long for me. It is constantly up in a clip and even with that I am starting to get more headaches. I think it's time to cut it off! This is kind of scary for me as this is the longest I have ever had my hair EVER! Oh, well. It does grow back. So here are some that I've found that I think are adorable. Another Confession...

To say that I am not familiar with where the books are located in the scriptures is an understatement. As you may know, this year in Gospel Doctrine we are studying the New Testament. For the first time ever I am taking the time to go through the lessons and read through them and the correlating scriptures prior to class. In fact I am on lesson 14, which is totally off the subject. Anyhow, reading through these lessons has really been great for me. It has helped me to focus on studying certain topics and not just reading the scriptures straight through...not that there is anything wrong with that. Also, as an added bonus, I can take as much time as I need to find the book and not feel stupid in class as everyone around me can open right up to it in no time. I know that this is silly and that no one even notices that if I don't know where the book is I will just kind of stare into space. Stupid I know but it's true!

I thought that perhaps I would share a scripture that really stood out to me tonight in my reading. In the special session of conference that was help recently for the people of Arizona, I found great comfort in something that was said. I do not remember it word for word but basically it was stated that the Lord gives plenty of warning, through the prophets, before anything happens. In this world we are living in I needed to hear this. In Amos 3:7 it reads: "Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets." If you follow the footnote for a it translates the word "but" into "until". I love how the servants of the Lord can say things so plainly and simply and that this Gospel is so plain and simple! It is absolutely astonishing to me how much is given in the scriptures right there for anyone and everyone to read for themselves!

One more awesome scripture that I will share is found in Alma 5:46. This explains what feeling and/or having personal revelation feels like..."Behold, I say unto you they are made known unto me by the Holy Spirit of God. Behold, I have fasted and prayed many days that I might know these things of myself. And now I do know of myself that they are true; for the Lord God hath made them manifest unto me by his Holy Spirit; and this is the spirit of revelation which is in me". Seriously, could you have said it any better yourself? I know I couldn't!

So, I guess the moral of this post is if you ever happen to be lucky enough to sit by me in Gospel Doctrine I promise I won't embarrass you! :) and THE CHURCH IS TRUE and how LUCKY we are to have it!

Amazed

I have been a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints my entire life. I have heard numerous testimonies born wherein people have prayed for something specific and then opened their scriptures randomly to find an answer to their prayer. I have never had that happen to me...that is until just now. I had been reading my scriptures and following along with the member study guide and just wrapped up with a prayer. I specifically prayed that I may continue to learn of my Savior's role in my life specifically and also as it pertains to my salvation. I prayed that I may have a greater understanding of Him and that my gratitude for Him may increase. I then randomly opened my scriptures to a verse that I had previously highlighted in Moroni Chapter 9 Verse 25. It reads :"My, son, be faithful in Christ; and may not the things which I have written grieve thee...but may Christ lift thee up, and may his sufferings and death, and the showing his body unto our fathers, and his mercy and long-suffering, and the hope of his glory and of eternal life, rest in your mind forever." I am amazed at the love that my Father in Heaven has for ME. I am merely one person and yet without fail I can constantly feel of His love. I love the Gospel with all of my heart. Saying that I am grateful to be a member of the church and to have the knowledge that I have doesn't seem adequate. I am grateful for my Savior and I look forward to gaining a better personal relationship with Him.

I cannot believe that it has really been ten years! Holy crap! Today Lonnie and I are celebrating our ten year anniversary. I watched our wedding video the other day and I must say that I am so glad that we have that. So much has changed, besides the obvious. Being able to see my grandmother, who has since passed on, was so great. Seeing how young everyone, especially our siblings and cousins were was fun. I am so grateful for Lonnie and all that he does for me and our family. To say that our life is a bit stressful is putting it nicely. He is sooo patient with me and loves me unconditionally. I truly couldn't ask for more. I am priveleged to be his eternal companion!

Such Questions Already

So as you know we adopted our children and they are Hispanic. Michelle has always seemed to be aware that her skin color is quite darker than others. She has been known to try and wash the brown off in the tub. We obviously have explained to her that she is beautiful and that this is how Heavenly Father has created her. Well, lately she has been trying to figure out who belongs to who. She's asked questions like "Who is your mommy?" or "Who's mommy is Grandma?"...you get the idea. We have always been very open with our children that they are adopted and when asked have told them that I am not their tummy mommy. Michelle has been having quite the questions in regards to her other mom. We have spent much time talking about their birth mother and why they aren't with her. One thing that Lonnie and I never want to do is to lie to them about what happened. Although, going into what really happened with a 6 year old I don't feel is appropriate either. So we just say that their mommy loved them but made some bad choices, was sick and was not able to take care of herself or them. Needless to say, we knew that we would have to talk about this issue with the children but never in my wildest dreams did I think it would be this soon. Although through it all I am still so thankful that I can look my children in the eye and tell them that their mother did love them. There are so many children that have been or are in the system that this is not the case. I know that some of you who read our blog have adopted yourselves. Any suggestions and/or ideas on what you do in these situations?

It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

As is everyone else, we are getting all ready for Christmas over here! It is so much fun and this is by far my most favorite time of year. All of the decorations inside the house are done...except for the tree! Last year we decided to throw it away after I was getting shocked a lot. Needless to say, we have not bought one yet and are thinking of having a real Christmas Tree this year. We will see! Anyhow, here are some of my favorites around our home!

Lost Tooth and a Beautiful Finish

Michelle lost her first tooth today and the one right next to it is now loose! I guess that the tooth fairy has her first job in our house tonight! Also, I am proud to say that I finished the Book of Mormon today! I was so sad to see it end. It truly was a great experience and I loved reading the stories of amazing faith.

A Day That I Wish Never Happened

Yesterday at 5:00 am I woke up to an uneasy stomach. I vomited once and went back to bed. About 30 minutes later I felt like I was going to vomit again. Luckily, I didn't. Instead I sipped on a little bit of water and ate 2 ritz crackers. Well within 10 minutes those came up too. I had a fever and was aching and had a headache, but I couldn't take anything as I couldn't even hold water down. Once Lonnie came home he took care of the children and I was just lying around. I tried again to sip on some water and had maybe a tablespoon of Jello. Luckily, Lonnie's mom and sister were able to come over and watch the children so Lonnie could go to sleep. I think he said he went to bed at about 10:00 right after giving me a blessing. By this time I am feeling absolutely horrible and still vomiting like I have never done before in my life. At about 11:00 I went into our room and I could not control myself with all of the aches, having difficulty breathing, and just not comfortable whatsoever. After about 5 minutes my body seemed to stop. My breathing slowed way down, I all of a sudden was not achy. It was at that time that my hands were going numb, cramping up, and turning purple. This by far was the scariest moment of my life, I felt so helpless. Lonnie called 911 and they were in the process of sending out the fire department. I barely moved my left foot and I was in excruciating pain. I was freaking everybody out by how loud I was screaming. Apparently I was hyperventilating, which made my hands worse. Also, I was dehydrated to make matters worse. Well the medics came and everything checked out normal. I was able to slow down by breathing and I decided that I did not need to go by ambulance, but that Lonnie would just take me in. So we get to the hospital and I am starting to get uncomfortable again. My stomach was starting to ache and the aches and headache were back. My breathing became bad again and I was hyperventilating. My fingers and hands began to cramp up again and man did it hurt. I have never had that happen before and it is painful and freaky. After about 2 hours I finally got to see a doctor. They ran blood work and nothing came up. So they are thinking that I have some type of virus. The doctor stated that with a lot of hand washing and just being really careful it should not be contagious. I am praying that no one gets this. Today I am just feeling like I normally do when I am not feeling well. Not eating a lot but able to keep liquids and small amounts of food down, which I am so grateful for. I am just taking it easy today and will hopefully continue to get better.

How Can This Be

Today in the car Michelle kept asking me if I would be mad at her if her tooth got broken. I assured her that I wouldn't and kind of let it go. Tonight after dinner she came up and started wiggling one of her bottom teeth. Yuck! It looked so weird. I had to call my mom to make sure that she is at the right age for this and sadly she is. She is sitting up in her bed waiting for her tooth to fall out. Why must they grow up so fast?

Ready to Run

So it has been three weeks since surgery and the stitches were taken out today. For whatever reason this kind of stuff really grosses me out. Anyhow, this week I can do a few things that I haven't been able to do in several weeks. First up...I can wash my foot on Saturday! Secondly, I have to get off of crutches this week and next week will be out of the massive boot! Wahoooooo!! Although, I'm still hesitant to do anything with it. I guess this is normal. Things are going just fine and hopefully will continue to. I came back home on Thursday and it's been crazy, but what else is new? This week is just like any other with a doctor's appointment today; therapy, school, and pest control tomorrow; school and housecleaner coming Thursday; and school and dog grooming appointment on Friday. I'll tell ya there is never a dull moment. Also, I am so hating this heat. It is a bit ridiculous! I am sooo ready to run to another state. I have been looking at what Utah has to offer and there are some positives but there are also so negatives. I'm sure it will never happen, but hey I can dream!

A Terrible Day

Today is an extrememly tough day for all those who have someone or know someone in law enforcement. I cannot believe what this world is coming to and how plain evil and cold people can be. I cannot even imagine what I would do if something like this ever happened to Lonnie. We know so many families of officers. Please pray for the family and for those that are working the case that they may find those who committed such a horendous act of murder. Lonnie knew the gentleman as he taught him a class in the academy. So I'm sure that we will be attending his funeral. It's the least we can do to show our respect. On a positive note, there was some justice today for Officer Cortez and his family. I personally knew his wife and he was a major influence on Lonnie joining the force. Again, please remember these families in your prayers and thank an officer for his or her hard work. Because these men and women truly never know if that day of "work" will be their last. May we come to realize who the real heros out there are.

All is well

What can I say? I love these kiddos so much! Althought there is something wrong with this picture! Surgery was this morning and things went very well. All along the doctor said to think skinny because the skinner my ankle was going into surgery the quicker the healing time would be. And today he made it huge! Oh well it's all for a good cause I suppose. He is an amazing doctor and I am very grateful that I was in his hands. So I will be chilling at my parents house for the next two weeks. This will be interesting. Thank you all so much for your prayers and thoughts. I had a very uneasy feeling prior to today. I have been praying for comfort in knowing that everything would be just fine, and it was. Thanks again!

Please Don't Judge Me

So I have been a member of the Church for just over twenty seven years now and I have a confession. I have never read the Book of Mormon. I am proud to say that I am less than 200 pages from erasing this embarrassing truth! Anyhow, that's not really the point of this post. I am constantly amazed at how many of the stories and warnings that are given in the scriptures still pertain to today. Why do we not get it? It is literally written in black and white. That is one of the many beauties of the Gospel...things are so black and white and so plain and simple. Recently I was reading Alma 60. Wow! What an eye opening chapter that is. Do you see some resemblance in today's world? If not, go read it again! :) I am just so grateful that I have the truth literally in my hands. I am grateful for the knowledge and testimonies that I have. I am grateful for a loving and forgiving Heavenly Father who still cares for me and wants me to succeed despite the dumb choices I have made. I love reading the scriptures and am so grateful for the prophets of old who took time to write them so that we could/would learn from their trials.

Oh Joy....

So just about two weeks ago I was up at the church playing some volleyball. Well, I went for a ball and my left ankle decided not to follow. It really didn't even hurt but what scared the crap out of me was the undeniable tearing sound I heard. It all happened on a Tuesday and the next day Saige and Gage had appointments with their eye doctor. I knew something was wrong when I couldn't even walk down the stairs or simply walk for that matter. So after the appointment and therapy for Mason I headed over to urgent care. They took x-rays and found nothing and recommended I follow up with an ortho. Well we already had a trip to Sea World planned for that weekend and you know stubborn old me I was not going to miss it. So we went! I saw a podiatrist last week and on his x-rays he found a fracture and was worried about a tear to the ligament. So off to get an MRI I went. I had a follow-up appointment this afternoon and I have torn two out of the three ligaments in my ankle. So, needless to say surgery will be here sometime in the near future followed by several weeks of rest and therapy. When asked how long of a recovery we are looking at I was given 2 weeks of no weight bearing in the boot, followed by 4 weeks in the boot, then to a soft cast and still on crutches. Next comes 9-12 sessions of therapy. All in all no jogging even for at least 6 months.

If you haven't guessed by now life has been rough here for the last couple of weeks. All that I can say is that we would not be making it if it weren't for the help of my mom, dad, and sister. My sister has practically been living here, when she can, and my parents have been filling in for her. Don't get me wrong, I love having them over and being able to spend time with them, but not under these circumstances. I feel so helpless. And to make matters worse, as you all know, we, or maybe I should say, I am homeschooling. Considering I cannot get around very well it all has been quite challenging lately.

Just for the record, people are not very nice and/or polite at all to people with crutches or in a wheelchair for that matter! It has been an eye opening experience for sure.

Well, I feel like I haven't blogged in a long time. So much has been going on lately and our days are so full now that it has been hard to keep up with this "blog world". Oh well. Here are some pictures of what we've been up to lately. School, school and did I mention school? All things considered things are going really well. I was even able to make 2 dinners, 4 loaves of bread, brownies, do a couple loads of laundry, and bathed all four kiddos! It was nice to finally feel productive!

First up, I have to take a moment and brag about Michelle. You see I had the children starting on the BOB Books but I have come to realize that they are starting to guess on words and not sound them out. Not at all what I wanted. So we have switched to some sight words and more common words that they can sound out. I showed these words to her Friday and she was able to sound them all out on her own! I could not believe it. Luckily Lonnie was home and he too got to join in on this celebration....to see her beaming with such pride was awesome! None of these words are her sight words, because those ones she cannot sound out and are thus sentenced to the red pocket chart because they don't follow the rules! :)

The next couple of photos are of the children digging for dinosaurs. This stinkin' toy we bought at Marshall's and it was such a waste and so frustrating for them. They were supposed to dig for fossils. The sand was so tough. We even got out the electric knife and had problems. So, needless to say, it has gone with the garbage man.

I am so fortunate to be able to be surrounded by such pure love and joy everyday! Don't get me wrong we have our moments, and even days but it is all so worth it. I still get a bit overwhelmed when I think about this homeschooling journey we have taken, but I have seen so much progress with each child and to be there when they are learning and to see it "click" with them is priceless. I love the fact that we can start each day with a family prayer, work on songs for the Primary Program, and just learn together everyday. Even when we aren't officially at school there are so many learning opportunities all around. Here's to another fun couple of weeks of learning!

School Has Started

This past weekend Lonnie and I attended a homeschooling conference and it was great! There was plenty of information and curriculum galore. Our official school year started yesterday and we are doing school on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. We have chosen to do a workbox system and each child has 10 boxes to complete each day. It is taking about 3-4 hours, which is not bad at all. I took some pictures today (just for you Michelle) and thought that I would share just exactly what we are doing.

First up, here is the main curriculum we are using. As you can see it's a mix. I've had the A to Z book for several years and there is some amazing stuff in there! Each letter has a unit on math, science, social studies, fine motor, music and arts. We are using Saxon Math, BOB books to read along with sight words and phonics. For handwriting we are using Explode the Code, Handwriting without Tears, and journals.

These are their credit cards that they get to earn money on to choose a reward with a certain game. When we play it I will share it too.

These are prompts that go in their workboxes, which I will share soon.

Here is all of the work, aside from class work and reading, that Michelle did today.

Here is an example of a journal. I loved this idea that a great friend shared with me and this has been the children's favorite so far. They have to draw a story on top and then tell me about it. For now I am having them trace the story. Next they will copy what I have written and finally they will write it on their own. This is such a perfect example of Mason's work. You never know what you are going to get. He was upset because I wouldn't let him turn the page of his journal and when I asked him what he drew a picture of this is what I got so he wrote it!

This is what I am using do display their artwork. It is so simple...a 12x12 scrapbook paper with a clothespin.

Here are the workboxes. Each child has their own row. The numbers start out on the left and when they have competed a workbox they move the letter to the right.

Gage usually plays with toys while we are doing school, but hey they are numbers at least!

And the best part of today..... shaving cream! They loved it and we are discussing our 5 senses this month for our theme. After going on a "field trip" around the house and backyard touching different things we came back in the classroom and got busy.

So far our school year is off to a great start. I've already had to do some rearranging of some things in the classroom but no big deal. I love watching them learn and there is no feeling like when they get it! Thanks for looking!

I have not been good at posting lately at all. I'm trying to finish up Lonnie's cousins' wedding pictures from months ago. After a little bit of editing tonight I truly do miss photography. It is so fun to create and capture moments and beautiful people such as this handsome guy! Trust me we have been so busy doing lots of good stuff. The school room is pretty much ready to go and our conference is this upcoming weekend. I'm looking forward to it. Also, on Tuesday we are going to take the older two children to the water park and have an amazing sitter for the younger two. We are also planning a short (just the way I like them) camping trip with Lonnie's brother and his wife before school starts too. Lots of fun things planned and good quality time being spent together! Oh, and I should mention that the Lord does answer prayers. Case in point church starts at 8:00 for us this year. However, we start at 9:00 now starting tomorrow! Oh Happy Day! :)

Unpacking vs. Packing

Well, I must say that it has been my experience that unpacking is so much more fun and goes way faster than packing does! Confused...don't be. We never heard back from Bank of America and they tried to auction the house for $406,000 (which is the amount the previous owner owed). Of course, no one bought it so it went to foreclosure. It should be listed anywhere between 2-6 weeks. Lonnie and I found another home that we put an offer in on too and we didn't get that one either. So, Lonnie and I have decided that we are just going to stay where we are. We have a beautiful home and will just do some adjusting to make it work. We will be adding garage cabinets, more shelves in the storage room upstairs, cabinets on the other side of the laundry room, cabinets in the bathrooms and whatever else we deem necessary! :) It kind of stinks not getting what truly was the house of my dreams but we have been so blessed and both of us really feel good about this decision. The unfortunate part is that now I get to unpack EVERYTHING that I packed up...like 30+ boxes of food! Oh, well at least all of the cabinets are all nice and cleaned out! :) Another great thing is once I clear out all of the boxes in what used to be the playroom I can set up the "real" schoolroom! I guess that I better go get unpacking!

Wow! It's been over a month since I have posted anything! Things have been busy around the Durham home lately. As we are all aware school is out and summer is in full force! The children's behavior has really been so much better since they have been home, which is definitely welcomed! :) Little Mr. Gage has really enjoyed having his siblings home too. He's so cute. So what's on the agenda for this summer? I'm glad you asked...first off we are still waiting to hear back from good old Bank of America on the home we put an offer in. Supposedly they have everything they need and we are just waiting for them to close. We definitely have been learning patience through this process. Second off we have implemented our homeschool trial period for the summer. We do school everyday, except for Sunday, for about 3 hours. So far so good. I was shocked at how much they didn't know. For example, Michelle does not know her numbers, and both Mason and Michelle have trouble identifying lowercase letters. So we have been doing a lot of review of numbers and letters. After three years of preschool I find this kind of crazy, but I have to remind myself that it is not her fault and we just need to make progress. We have started working on reading the BOB books. Michelle can read the first two of them all by herself and Mason has no interest in learning to read. I think because it takes so much focus that this is going to be a challenge for him. He is, however, really good at putting the letters in order and saying their sounds. Saige and Gage also sit in with us while we do counting, reading, and phonics. Last week I introduced the "+" and "=" sign along with addition. When reviewing them yesterday I was happily surprised at how much they remembered and they even did an addition worksheet! It is so rewarding to see them learn and the pride that they have as well! We have really been praying hard and contemplating on what is the best thing to do for each one of the children. I have felt so at peace with our decision to homeschool them. I know that we have and will continue to receive criticism from others but quite frankly this is not their choice to make. We are entitled to revelation for our family and trust me we have received it! It still kind of freaks me out that we are doing this, but I have learned on numerous occasions to trust in my Heavenly Father and whatever His plan is. I am so grateful and humbled at the opportunity that I have to be the mother to these four amazing children. I love them so much and still cannot believe that I have been entrusted with them. Talk about an overwhelming responsibility! Yikes!!! Anyhow, I am rambling on now but just wanted to document what we've been up to and how things are going!

On The Move

Well, we finally heard back last week regarding the house we put an offer on in January. We will close sometime early in May! We are so excited. The home inspection is tomorrow morning. So assuming that there are no deal breakers (which we are pretty confident that there is not) we will be moving soon! The kiddos are all excited and are looking forward to the pool. I think that Gage will have the most difficult time transitioning but we will see. He is very particular to his room and surroundings. He will soon be sleeping all by his lonesome, along with all of the other children as this house is huge! It is just under 4000 square feet, has 6 bedrooms, a 4 car garage, a ginormous kitchen, a pool, and so much more! We have some busy weeks ahead of us but we are looking forward to it!

Reflecting

15 years ago today an event occurred in Oklahoma City that forever changed my life. Growing up there was a family in our ward that had moved to OKC just prior to the bombing and unfortunately the father of this family was among the victims of this horrible event. I have had the priveledge of going to OKC a couple of times now and every time I have gone to the memorial sight. It is amazing and was so well done. I remember the day and all of the news coverage. For a couple of days no one knew if Paul was in the building at the time of the explosion. He was among the missing for a couple of days. This was also an incredible spiritual experience for me as well. You see my dear friend Poiette and I decided to fast for the finding of Paul. I do not believe that they ever found him, but I remember vividly sitting in the school cafeteria having to explain to others why we were not eating. It was my first true experience of fasting and I am so grateful for it! It was amazing the comfort that I felt during this time and I have never forgotten it. How powerful fasting and praying really is. I am so grateful for the knowledge of the Gospel that I have and for the countless blessings that I receive from being a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints! I an grateful for the knowledge of eternal families and for the opportunity that we all have to be a part of one. May the Lord's comforting hand be upon those families of the victims of the Oklahoma City Bombing and may we all strive to keep their memories alive!

Frustration

Oh man. Where to begin... So Mason has been on this medication that both Lonnie and I were okay with, not excited about but okay nonetheless. We liked it because it is in his system and out within about 3-6 hours. So we were giving it to him in the morning after breakfast so he would be good for school. Then by the time he got home it was out of his system. No big deal we are used to it. We had his annual IEP meeting last week and everyone that works with him said that they had seen tremendous differences (in a positive way) since he started this medication. Awesome! We had an appointment with Dr. K on Wednesday and I told her that at home we really haven't seen a difference the very few times we've given it to him prior to big events that we know would be difficult and/or overstimulating to him, but that his teacher and therapists all agreed that it is helping him at school. I also explained that he was not given any medication last week because of spring break and he simply didn't need it. I did advise her that he has problems going to sleep but once he is asleep he sleeps great. So she writes a new prescription for a medication that will last 10-12 hours and a sleep medication that will help him go to sleep and will be out of his system within 3 hours. So on Wednesday night we gave him 1/2 of the sleep medication. He was asleep within 20 minutes...a miracle drug! or so we thought. He woke up hysterical at 11:00 and was wacked out. He was saying that there were monsters in his room (which he never does), it was too dark in his room, etc. So needless to say Wednesday was a rough night. Yesterday morning I gave him his new medication. I didn't really notice anything different with his behaviors during the time he was home. Mason was asleep when I got home last night at about 8:20ish which is unusual for him. Lonnie went to work and I went to bed about 10:00. At 11:30 I woke up to Mason talking, the hall lights on, his bedroom light on, and all of his shutters open. So I went in and asked what was going on he wanted a hug and a kiss. Alright. Done. I turned everything off and closed his shutters and said good night. At 2:30 I woke up to him screaming and all the lights on again with the shutters open. What the heck?! Again, he wanted a hug and a kiss. Lights out, shutter shut...good night. 4:30 same darn thing. This time I took Saige out of his room and locked his door. For about an hour and a half all I've heard is kicking, grunting, and screaming. How the others sleep through this I do not know. They are blessed.

So long story short Mason will NOT be receiving any medications today. I WILL be calling Dr. K's office and saying I DON'T THINK SO! We are moving backwards vs. forwards. I am so frustrated with everything. We are also trying to figure out the school thing. As it stands I do not want what the school is wanting to do right now. I still need to go down to the school and observe the classroom they want to put him in. WHY? Why is this so difficult? Why don't others, especially educators who supposedly love children, truly care about our children? Why haven't I received an answer to our prayers yet? Why didn't it dawn on me that hello the medication was working and if it's not broke don't fix it? All I know right now is that I am not happy with the way things are going and some phone calls will be made today. Also, I'm pretty sure that at least one Temple trip and fasting is in order! It is so difficult to sit back and watch your child go through this. And I'm afraid that this is just the beginning. I am so nervous and scared about the whole school thing. Which school to put him in, what type of classroom to put him in, how's his teacher going to be, how are the therapists going to be, is he going to be academically challenged? So many questions with no answers right now. Is it going to be like this every school year? Wow. This is going to be such a long road. I know that it is completely worth everything though. My child deserves to have the same quality of life, education, and opportunities afforded to him as any other child and you can bet that this momma will not just sit around and not take action. So here's to making a lot of phone calls today and hoping for some answers soon!

Pure Joy...

As many of you know this week is Spring Break and I must say that I have had soo much fun with my children! I've tried to do something with them everyday. I am so blessed to have such amazing children! They are so cute and truly are children of God. They amaze me with their questions about Heavenly Father and the Gospel. Mr. Mason talks about his mission almost everyday. He always tells us that he wants to go to the jungle and we have told him that maybe he will get to go there on his mission. Anyhow, I told him that he has to wait until he is 19 and he counted to 19 and said see I did it. Oh Mason how I love you! Michelle has been such the big sister lately and so helpful! She truly has such a pure heart and tries to do what is good. Saige is getting so big! :( She follows Michelle around and tries to be just like her. She is now randomly saying "your a bunda". (which in portuguese is butt) Great! It is cute though! And Gage is just so dang crazy. He is such a momma's boy and I love it. What can I say I truly am so blessed everyday that I get with these angels!

Our Weekend In a Nutshell

This weekend was a crazy, fun, long, and beautiful one! Lonnie's brother got married on Saturday and I shot his cousin's engagement while they were in town for the wedding. So my little break from photography has officially come to an end. It has been fun to photograph and edit again! Although, I am still not ready to leap back into this full time it was a nice and welcomed change. Also, we should be hearing back from the bank on the new home within 2-3 weeks! Crazy but exciting times!

to not laugh! So last night I joined up with my mother and sister for a pink party for Mary Kay. When we arrived there were probably about 50 gals there and a lot of consultants. Anyhow so here we are sitting listening to this gal tell us her story on how she was introduced to the product and her story. The entire time I was thinking this is not my cup of tea. I was bored out of my mind and freezing. Anyhow they continued on with their little program and they had us do an experiment on the top of one of our hands. First we used the 3 in 1 cleanser, then the microdermabrasion, the moisturizer, and then they came around and put a small amount of foundation on the top of each hand and had us rub it in to compare both hands. Oh my gosh! I was disgusted at the top of my hand that did not receive this little treatment. Suddenly I was interested!

If you know me at all you know that I am not into makeup or all of that girly stuff. Sorry, I'm just not. However, when I looked at these women who were using these products that were older than me, I'd say in their 30's, 40's, and 50's their skin looked great! So something is working for them. I know that I have spent countless hours in the sun growing up and was not the best at protecting my skin. Long story short I figured that now is the time to do something about the damage I have done and to help prevent further damage. And hey if these products worked for several women why not me. And Mary Kay has been around forever! So, I decided that if I am going to use these great products day in and day out and spend money, you all know how cheap I am...I have no problem admitting it :), then I needed to get the best deal possible. So I signed up to be a consultant. Now I can enjoy these products, take care of my skin, get a great deal on the products, share them with you, and pass on some savings to you as well!

Yes, I know it is crazy to say that I am a consultant for Mary Kay! (REMEMBER--YOU promised not to laugh!) It sounds so girly to me... Anyhow, I will keep you posted on how well the products work for me and in the meantime if you or someone you know would like to see the demonstration that got me hooked or simply would like to order product feel free to let me know!

So Mason and Michelle will be starting Kindergarten in a couple of months. YIKES. I really have been trying to do my homework with this fun stuff. I am like 99.99% sure that I want to homeschool them. Thanks to an awesome friend, Courtney, I have really learned a lot and have found some great books. I am looking forward to attending the convention at the end of July! We will be doing a "test" run to see how things go over the summer. There is a plan B...promise!

Well, Lonnie and I went to go look at the new house again this morning. We are so excited and so many little things are already done! The current homeowners are so nice and were so helpful this morning. We were even advised that an appraiser has already been out to the home, which is great! Apparently BOA sends out two appraisers though so they are still waiting for that one to be done. We are just excited that things seem to be moving along!

Emergency Kits are DONE!!

A while back I assembled a 72 hour emergency kit for each one of my children. Today I finished one for both Lonnie and I. Also, I made our car emergency kits as well. One for Lonnie and one for me. Now all I have to do is get the clothes together for the 72 hour kits. Hopefully I can to that tomorrow. Just in case you would like to go get a couple at the Walmart in El Mirage in their bag section they have totes that are nice sized on clearance for $2. I purchased 6 of them. Two for the car emergency kits, one for the clothes for the girls, one for the clothes for the boys, one for mom's clothes, and one for dad's clothes.

In each of the adult kits there is: nutrigrain bars, pudding, beefaroni, applesauce, soup, craisins, tuna salad, trail mix, peaches, fiber one bars, granola bars, peanut butter crackers, (3) 24 ounce bottles of gatorade, (6) half liter bottles of water, (14) emergency packs of water, hard peppermint candies, jolly ranchers, wet wipes, toothpaste, toothbrush, deoderant, kleenex, hand sanitizer, pink lemonade sticks, LED keychain flashlight, hairbrush, vasaline, tums, spoons, forks, knives, poncho, fan, pen, paper, packs of gum.

In the children's kits there are: instant breakfast, poptarts, pudding, beefaroni, oranges, applesauce, chicken salad, goldfish, chips, animal crackers, peanut butter crackers, fruit snacks, raisins, hard candies, (10) emergency packs of water, kleenex, washcloths with soap, wet wipes, hand sanitizer, shampoo and conditions, bubbles, toothbrushes, spoon, fan, gum, diapers, and wipes.

In addition to having a 72 hour kit for each member of the family I am also working on assembling 2 family emergency buckets. They will house things such as a shovel, roll of paper towels, waterproof matches, toilet paper, dish soap, small stove with fuel, plates, bowls, napkins, cups, can opener, rope, duct tape, work gloves, trash bags, foil, hand sanitizer, washcloths, etc. That way we have a little bit more that just the basics of what is in our 72 hour kits.

A little side note when I was checking out the man asked if I was planning a beach trip (because of all of the totes I was buying). When I said that they were for 72 hour kits he said WHAT? I said they are for emergency planning. We are a peculiar people! :}

Homemade Pizza Sauce

I wanted to make pizza for dinner tonight and realized that I didn't have any canned sauce. So I googled it. Here is the recipe I used and it was better that the stuff in the can! Keep in mind I doubled mine for a cookie-sheet sized pizza.

8 oz can tomato sauce
1/2 teaspoon oregano
1/4 teaspoon garlic salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
pinch of sugar

Mix all ingredients together.

As promised I made these cinnamon rolls this morning and this recipe did not disappoint! Here it is and yes even Mr. Mason approved!!

Dough:
1 Cup Warm Milk (just heat up in microwave for 30 seconds)
1 Cup Warm Water
1/3 Cup Sugar
1 Package Yeast (or 2 1/4 teaspoons)
1/3 Cup Oil
1/2 Tablespoon Salt
1 Egg
Flour (about 4 - 4 1/2 Cups)

Filling:
6 Tablespoons Melted Butter
3/4 Cup Sugar
Cinnamon

Icing:
2 Cups Powdered Sugar
2 Tablespoons Melted Butter
1 Teaspoon Vanilla
2-4 Tablespoons Vanilla

In mixer combine yeast, sugar, and warm water. Let sit until slightly bubbly (about 5 minutes). Add milk, oil, and egg. Mix well. Add 2 cups of flour and salt. Mix well. Add 1/2 cup flour at a time until it comes away from the side of the bowl and isn't too sticky. Let dough rise in mixing bowl for 30 minutes. Roll dough on to a floured surface to make an approximate 9x13 inch rectangle. Spread melted butter on dough. Evenly sprinkle sugar over butter. Sprinkle cinnamon over sugar. Roll up like a jelly roll from long side and slice. Place in a greased 9x13 baking dish. Cover and let rise an additional 30 minutes. Bake at 375 degrees for 12-15 minutes or until rolls are nice and golden. Mix up frosting while rolls are just getting out of the oven. Pour icing over warm rolls and enjoy!

* A couple of things that I did different. First, I used powdered eggs. Second, this recipe made two pans of cinnamon rolls for me! Third, I doubled the frosting recipe because I had two pans of rolls. And last but not least for the second rising period I warmed my oven to 200 degrees and turned it off. Placed the rolls in the oven and cut down my rising time in half! Also I use my convection oven so I only had to cook them for 10 minutes.

I really did like this recipe. Have fun with it!

Corn from 2002

For dinner this evening I am making Taco Salad, for the first time I might add. When getting a can of corn from upstairs I looked at the date and it was from February 2002. Crazy! I love seeing old dates and food is still good. Also, I am always trying to buy in bulk and this includes taco seasoning. However, when a recipe calls for 1 packet taco seasoning I never know how much that is. So tonight I measured it out and it is 1/3 cup. I also found an easy recipe for cinnamon rolls that I can't wait to try in the morning. If it's a good one I'll share!

Bravery or Stupidity

So I have really been wanting to incorporate more of our food storage into our everyday cooking/baking. So here's what I am going to do. Only use store-bought milk for drinking and use powdered milk for baking and cooking. Also, I am going to start using my powdered eggs and, here's a really big/scary one, I'm going to use beans for oil and butter in baking. I also found a place that has recipes for making your own sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, and condensed soups. I don't know why but it seems like just about every recipe I use calls for cream of chicken or mushroom soup. I'm excited to try them out.

I'm sure that this will take some getting used to but I really do want to see how much I can save and how easy it is to use "food storage". Hopefully soon I can get everyone drinking powdered milk too! We'll see. Do any of you use your food storage regularly? If so, what have you found works the best for you?

Truly Grateful - Journal Post

I have really been trying to focus on things that are truly important in life, such as being more diligent in reading my scriptures, having more patience with my children, slowing down and really thinking and contemplating each word that I utter when I pray, and one of which is completely new to me is reading the Relief Society manual.

I was so grateful when our Relief Society Presidency gave us the challenge of reading the Book of Mormon starting on January 1 and finishing just before Easter. I will admit I am behind, but nonetheless I am reading and I cannot say what a difference this has made in my day! I love reading the stories in the scriptures and being able to know exactly where so many of those sweet Primary songs come from. I think it is so neat that we can not only teach our children the fun and catchy tunes but then reinforce what they are learning by showing them where it is in the scriptures. Speaking of children, I really have been working hard on trying to be more patient with each one of them. I sometimes sit back and think to myself would I like it if someone were talking to me like that? I don't know I think that I get so caught up in everything to do that they just are on the "to do" list. How unfortunate and lame it that? Yikes! I am so grateful for the amazing opportunity that I have to be a mother and to have such awesome spirits in my home. I loves my little stinkers so much and would not trade them for anything at all!

While waiting for Mason during his therapies on Monday I thought why not bring something good to read. And if you know me at all you know how much I HATE reading! However, I did bring along the Relief society manual with me this past Monday and man did I learn a lot. It is such basic concepts of the gospel that are so great to go over. For example, I feel that I understand the "fall" of Adam and Eve. Never had I before even contemplated those specific words. Also, by contemplating who our Heavenly Father really is and His role has really helped me to have more meaningful prayers. I just feel that we have been so blessed lately and everything is just working out. I am always amazed at how the Lord provides and at His tender mercies. I am so grateful to have this wonderful thing in my life we call the Gospel. It has been life changing for me and continues to be as I continue to learn and grow. I am especially grateful for our ward family. When Lonnie and I first moved into this ward we really did not care for it too much. Don't get me wrong there are a ton of amazing people in it however we just didn't feel that it was really a warm ward. Well, as we have been looking at homes it is incredible how strong of a feeling that we have had that we need to stay in our ward. We truly have come to appreciate it for what it is and it does feel like home. How wonderful a ward family can be! There are so many that would drop absolutely everything to serve others. I love it! Service is so contagious and we all need to do more of it! Now off to make lunch before those cute kiddos come home...

We have received 3.66" of rain here in Surprise. I'm just hoping that our home is not flooded in the morning. Seriously, our backyard is crazy looking right now. There was even a tornado that touched down in Scottsdale. So much for living in an area with no natural disasters. Yikes. Here's hoping to a safe night. BTW Lonnie has to work tonight. Sure hope he's safe too...

An Interesting Post

I am writing this post to see if there is anyone who may be interested, or knows someone who is interested in renting our home in a few months (possibly 3-6). We are wanting to make a move on another home but we want/need to have a rental agreement on this one. This is were it gets kind of sticky as we do not know when the home we would like to get into will be going into short sell and once it does, who knows if we will even get it. Should this particular home that we have in mind not work out, we would continue to look elsewhere. That being said we would like to have someone lined up to move into our current home. Our home is just over 2500 square feet with 4 bedrooms and a den/play room downstairs. There are 3 full baths and a 3 car garage. There are a ton of upgrades throughout the home, some of which include upgraded cherry cabinets, granite countertops, travertine tile, crown molding, stainless steel appliances, plantation shutters throughout and so on. I have officially completed all of the wedding editing that needed to happen. I have taken down all of the Christmas decorations inside of the house. I am so looking forward to just getting a grip on my house again! I look forward to spending some time with one of my sister's missionary companions this week. I am also really looking forward to starting the Book of Mormon again. What a great challenge given to us from the Relief Society! Looking forward to what 2010 will bring!

To Shoot or Not to Shoot ... That is THE Question

As many of you know, I have 4 very young children who are very close in age. Just how close...9 months between the first two, 14 months between the next one, and 15 months between the last two. Yes you read that correctly there is not even a 2 year gap between all three of my older children. Oh and did I mention that the oldest is only 5? As you can imagine or may even know things around here can get pretty hectic and simply ridiculous at times.

Just over two years ago I took a huge leap of faith and opened my own photography business. I have loved it as it provides me with an opportunity to get out of the house and let my creativity flow. Not to mention the amazing moments that I have been involved in and the incredible people that I have the chance to meet. However, so much is going on at home from just the everyday upkeep to trying to get two kiddos ready to start kindergarten, to potty training, and so on and so on that I strongly feel that something has to give. I absolutely LOVE photography and am truly going to miss it. However, I have waited to be a mother for so long and this dream is here and is now. I do not want to regret anything in life especially when it comes to raising my children. I love them so dearly and the time is just flying by.

So I have prayed about this decision and feel that I need to let the photography go. It is so time consuming from the shoot which usually takes about 4 hours including all the preparing, driving, and the shoot itself. And then there is editing. Oh my how that can go on and on. I haven't even mentioned the "business" aspect of it all. Don't get me wrong it is all a beautiful thing but there truly is a time and a place for everything including talents and/or hobbies. Right now my time should be and needs to be devoted to my beautiful family.

Thank you all so much for your trust and support. This decision has not been an easy one but I know it is for the best right now for me and my family.

A Sad (in a good way) / Memorable Day

Today is Gage's 2nd birthday! I cannot believe it. Where on earth has the time gone? I cannot say what a surprise this child was and how extremely grateful I am for this little miracle. I remember when we got the phone call...Lonnie and I knew that the birth mom was pregnant again (not like that was anything new) and we had already decided that if we were asked that there was no way we would be able to handle another one. Well, when we were getting ready one day CPS called and said that mom had a little boy and they needed to know that day whether we wanted him. Oh no. Lonnie gave me a look that I don't think I've ever seen before. I think he was a little bit disappointed in CPS for even calling. Anyhow we went on with our day/morning and Lonnie looks over and says if I can name him we will take him! What?!! So that was it. It was a done deal. Not really. We prayed really fast and felt very strongly that we needed to take this child. Seriously? How on earth was I going to do this. I already had three little ones, my sister was getting ready to leave on her mission and Lonnie would soon be starting the Police Academy. Heavenly Father knows everything. Gage has been the best baby ever and so content! He also sent my parents to help out soo much during those trying times.

I remember driving with my sister to go down to the hospital to pick him up when he was just 3 days old. (sorry, fighting back tears now). She stayed in the care with the other kiddos and I went in. I told them who I was and who I was there for. It was so weird. They said wash your hands mom and you can hold your baby. When I first saw him I thought no way! How precious and he is all mine. No visitations, no "bonding" with the birth mom. HE IS MINE! He was so hairy and tiny, but oh so perfect! When I got him to the car my sister thought that he looked like a little old man (small eyes, hairy, and wrinkly). Mason just looked at him and knew that that was his brother. It was a great confirmation that we had made the right choice.

Now, 2 extremely quick years later and I am still so in love with this little guy. How could you not be? From his gorgeous curly locks, to his deep old man voice, to his sweet personality and so much more. I am thankful to be the mother of this amazing little one and I cannot wait to see what the future has for this little guy! I love you so much Gage Anthony. Happy Birthday!!

Lonnie's birthday was yesterday and was really fun. We didn't do a lot but just got to hang out together. For Christmas we also decided that we were going to buy a wii for the family. We have been putting it off for a while now just because we weren't sure if we wanted to add another distraction to things that really matter most in life. However, we thought that this would provide a great opportunity for more family time. We will never have any violent games though or it is gone! We have games like Guitar Hero, Deal or No Deal, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader, and so on. The kids and I got guitar hero for Lonnie's birthday and you guessed it we could not wait until Christmas to get out the wii. So we had some fun last night and are enjoying it. The kids like it too!

Teaching my children manners is a top priority to me. There are so many people out there who do not use them and I swore my family would not fit into this category. So after years of saying, "what to you say" and "because we need to be respectful" I think that at least one child is getting it now without having to be prompted!! Miss Michelle has really matured a lot lately. I am so proud of her and yet it makes me so sad to see just how fast she is growing up! She honestly has been the perfect child for about a week now and I am loving all of the tender moments! I think one of the cutest things she said was when I was tucking her in bed the other night. I told her that she was such a good girl that day and how happy that made me and her daddy. She said yeah, I want to be a good girl lots of days so I can go to kindergarten! Hey whatever motivation works! I love you my sweet beautiful Michelle!

Almost! I was looking through adds yesterday and Albertsons is having a sale on flour. Here's the deal it is Pillsburry Flour, the 5 pound bag for $1. This is crazy good! In fact when I went shopping yesterday the everyday low price at Wal Mart was $2.38. So to say that this is a good deal is an understatement! There also is an explanation on homework for shopping over here!

Do you have a garage door opener in your car...

and do you also have a GPS system? If so be careful. I guess that a new thing is happening where people will go to an event that you are at (say a football game) break into your car and check the GPS system for "home". They then will drive to your home and they have the garage door opener right there and will invade your home and steal your goods. And because they have an idea as to how long you will be at the football game they know how long they have, approximately, until you get home. So change your "home" address on your GPS to a nearby gas station or grocery store. That way when you need your GPS to get you home you will know how to get home from that location. Just be careful out there!

Fry's Specials

This is the last day for some amazing deals at Fry's. I just went and bought 6 types of items and spent $45.01 and saved $71.56. (Remember this is without any coupons. I know you can save even more but frankly I don't have the time for that.) I didn't need any off it. But man when they are giving it away might as well stock up!

Also if you can try to set aside some money for food storage as a lot of the "basics" (i.e. flour, sugars, baking goods) go on sale during the holidays and it is a great time to stock up!

Halloween 2009

The children had so much fun this year! It was so neat to see the older two actually understand what it is all about! Michelle went as Princess Belle. Mason went as a Brasilian Soccer Player. Saige went as Princess Cinderella. Gage went as a lion. They were all so cute! We went to Grandma and Grandpa Durham's trunk or treat on Thursday night and Grandma and Grandpa Moffitt's on Friday night. On actual Halloween night Lonnie had to work and the kids and I stayed home. It was a good night until we got egged. Oh joy! Not! Anyhow it was a fun holiday and I'm excited for the others that are coming soon!!

Update

There is some good news that came out of the appointment today and that is that the doctor doesn't think that there is anything wrong with Mason. He did order an MRI and some blood work to be done. So I guess that we will see the results of that when they come in. I did get a referral to a developmental pediatrician, which I think will be helpful as well. I started thinking today that because he has been given the diagnosis of ADHD and they have been wanting to medicate him that perhaps they are wanting to see how he reacts to the medications before saying that there is anything else going on as well. Who knows... We still have our appointment with Dr. K over at Arizona's Children in the middle of December. We will probably start him on medication, which we are a lot more comfortable with. Not exactly excited about it but I do feel that it is time to see if medication will make his quality of life a little bit better.

Thank you all for your support. We really do appreciate all of the love and help we get from each of you. Mason is such an amazing young boy and we are eternally grateful to have him in our family. I love this little man more than words can say and I would not change him or our circumstances for anything. So, the answer is NO, for those of you out there who have asked "don't you want to trade him in for a better model". No I love Mason the way Mason is. But yes, I would like to trade you in for a better model! Ha! People are amazing with what they will say. Oh well. Their loss on missing out on such a joyous little angel!

On another note we went to Lonnie's parents trunk or treat this evening and I could not have asked for better behaved children! I am so proud of each one of them. They use their manners so well! Sometimes I truly wonder what I did to deserve to be entrusted with such beautiful and amazing little beings. I love this "job" of being a mom. What greater blessing is there out thee? What greater reward than seeing your children happy is there? I am grateful for the opportunity that I have to be a mother!

Whole Wheat Recipes

I have been trying to use my food storage items more and in particular my wheat. So this morning I made whole wheat blender pancakes, whole wheat bread, and am now making whole wheat cookies. Shh...don't tell the kids or Lonnie that they are make with wheat flour! If you and your family are just starting to use whole wheat introduce it slowly. We have been eating the whole wheat bread for quite a while now. Anyhow, here are the recipes...

Whole Grain Blender Pancakes

1 cup milk

1 1/4 cups wheat kernels, whole and uncooked

2 eggs

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

2 tablespoons oil

2 1/2 tablespoons honey or sugar

Put milk and wheat kernels in blender. Blend on highest speed for 4-5 minutes or until batter is smooth. Add the rest of the ingredients. Blend on low. Cook pancakes as normal.

Whole Wheat Chocolate Chip Cookies

1 cup butter, softened

3/4 cup white sugar

1 cup brown sugar

2 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla

3 cups wheat flour

3/4 teaspoon salt

3/4 teaspoon baking soda

1 12-ounce bag chocolate chips

Cream together butter, sugars, and vanilla. Add flour, salt and baking soda. Beat well. Stir in chocolate chips. Drop onto cookie sheet by tablespoons. Bake at 350 for 8-10 minutes.

* If you use all wheat flour you can tell, next time I will probably do half and half.

Down on the farm!

Yesterday I spent some time with Saige, Gage, Kristen and my mom. It was so much fun to just hang out for a little while. We took them to a local farm and then did some shopping and got some grub! Saige really enjoyed the farm, however, Gage didn't as much as we thought he would. Oh well. We tried! Thanks mom and Kristen for a fun day!

Lonnie and I adventured out into the deep dark woods with Michelle and Mason for a couple of nights. It was fun and the kids really enjoyed it. It was so nice to get away from it all. Although I did miss my warm house. During the day it was about 55 degrees. Heaven only knows how cold it got at night. Here are the two happy campers!

shaped eyes that is! Yep. It's true. Little Miss Saige has them and will soon be sporting her new glasses! The crazy part about it is that had she not been so clumsy we wouldn't have thought anything about her vision. Dr. Cassidy stated that it is genetic and runs strong and recommended bringing in all of her biological siblings. So it is probably obvious what we will be doing after we get referrals.

AND

Mason and Michelle are so excited to finally be going camping tomorrow night. This has been months in the planning and we are stoked! Mom is a little bit nervous about oh I don't know bears, elk, livestock and murderers. Paranoid?...yep just a little! Oh well, I'm sure it will be loads of fun and beautiful!

So here I am editing a wedding that was on September 5th. I still have about 100 more of the photos that I took to edit. Then I my second shooter too an additional 250+ that I have to edit. Plus I have an engagement shoot to work on. There is a lot to do. I so wish that I had someone willing to get the editing to a "foundation" for me to have fun and then get creative with. It is sooo time consuming to edit photos. Oh well. Lonnie is off to Cold Stone for some comfort food!

This year when the backpacks went on clearance I wanted to buy one for each of the children to put their 72 hour emergency kits in. Well, good old Walmart had them for $3 each. Not the cutest but hey they were just what I was looking for!

I have stuffed each bag with the following so far:

* 3 puddings

* 2 pouches of fruit snacks

* 1 mini bubbles

* 1 bottle of instant breakfast

* 6 antibacterial wipes

* 3 6 packs of peanut butter crackers

* toothbrush

* travel sized kleenex

* travel sized hand sanitizer

* shampoo/conditioner (1 small bottle for all 4 kids)

* chicken salad with crackers

* 1 small box of raisins

* 2 cups of oranges

* 1 cup of beef a roni

* 1 small box of goldfish

* 3 lemonade flavor packs

* 1 cup of applesauce

* 1 box of animal crackers

* 1 bag of doritos

* 5 disposable washcloths

* 10 pouches of emergency water

* toothpaste (1 small tube for all 4 kids)

* 3 diapers and 40 wipes (Saige)

* 12 diapers and 40 wipes (Gage)

So I know that I need to add a couple of more things like pop tarts, oatmeal, utensils, cups, clothes and more food. But I am so excited to get started on this project! Now maybe I should put one together for Lonnie and I! :]

It was so hard to just sit in the congregation while all of the other children were being directed to their seats and knowing that there was not going to be a seat for my son. I know that it is not fair to everyone else to have him even attempt it. But as a parent I already feel the rejection that he is getting. Please don't think that I am speaking badly of anyone in Primary. They are all fantastic and work very hard to accomidate Mason and his needs. This is just another "real life" situation that we knew was coming but perhaps not emotionally ready for. I love this little child so much and I just want him to be able to function normally and for it to not have to be such a struggle for him. We are trying just about everything from numerous therapists to various doctors. Everyone's answer has to do with the fact that he was a drug baby and what else should I expect. I am not going to take this for an answer. Yes he was a drug baby. Yes there is a chemical inbalance in his brain. Yes I am ready to medicate (or at least try). Yes I am scared. Yes I wish so badly that I could just make it all better. Yes I am tired of having to make a billion meals a day just so he will eat. Yes I feel hopeless and all alone. Yes I am tired of hearing how I just need to learn to deal with it. Yes I am so sick of all of the looks that I get all of the time. I could just go on and on. Bottom line is I need to get this kid some help soon. I have gotten numerous referrals to numerous specialists that somehow we never get to see because of one thing or another. I am tired of the dead ends. Something has to give and I need a good doctor who know what the heck they are doing. A doctor that will not treat me as though I am making this stuff up. I will run a freakin' video camera if I need to. Okay enough! It is Sunday and I should not be feeling like this. If any of you that read this have any input as to where I could possibly go that may be able to help please let me know. I have to get this figured out and I will be spending a great deal of time in doing so I just know it. I have to do this. For him. For me. For our family. I love my son just as much as any other mother or parent out there does and I am not going to give up!

Happy {belated} Birthday Michelle!

So this post is one day late. Oh well. Such is life. Yesterday was Michelle's 5th birthday! How on earth do we have a 5 year old? The time has flown by and I cannot believe how big she is getting. She is growing so fast but still maintains to be such a sweet and amazing little girl!

Since this post is about Michelle I have to share a great story...more for documentation purposes. A couple of days ago Michelle went with me to the grocery store during nap time. As soon as we walked in there was this inflated pumpkin that had a ghost coming in and out of it. She looks at it and says, "Look mom. It's the Holy Ghost!" She was so stinkin' cute! After trying not to crack up completely and making too much of a scene I told her that that is not the Holy Ghost but a Halloween ghost. So as I'm checking things out on the aisle I here..."Hey Holy Ghost. How's it going today?" Man I love this little miracle!

Today is little Miss Saige's third birthday! I cannot believe how fast time has flown. She is such a joy and we are so grateful to have her in our family. I love her little distinct voice and how much she loves to sing songs. This girl could sing all day long. Saige has made it over some pretty big hurtles in her young life and continues to make great progress.

We love you beautiful baby girl and hope that you have a great birthday!
